Where reality & fantasy merge.

Waking from Dreams was my first novel length story. Actually, it was my first piece of completed fiction since I was in secondary school.  The 'revised 2nd edition 2024' was the result of my being unable to resist correcting some punctuation/syntax errors on the first page, which led me to changing the double pause between sentences, which is educated-in-the-80's out-of-date, to single pause that is the preferred style today. While making those simple corrections, I noticed a couple of random paragraphs that I also couldn't resist tweaking. Hmm! Ten years after writing WfD's, I'm a more skilled writer, and I could probably find fault with nearly every paragraph now. What to do?  I could invest countless hours into rewriting, or alternatively, spend those hours on new writing projects, creating new characters and stories and magic. I've decided to let it be; it is what it is - a great story and well deserving of a read.

Waking from Dreams is written in the sub-genre of magical realism and comes in at eighty-six thousand words in length.

Deeply unhappy and haunted by tragic events of the past, 22 year old Isabel feels she is becoming a ghost.  She knows that if she does not change her life she may disappear altogether.  In desperation she secretly takes flight to her dead Grandmother’s derelict cottage, drawn there by unusual childhood memories.  There, she discovers she has inherited her grandmother’s ability to sense supernatural beings and wield supernatural powers.  She finds herself on an unexpected journey and discovers secrets than even she can scarcely believe . . . secrets that may have dire consequences for those she loves.

As an intense summer storm assaults the small town, a storm that not all will survive, Isabel finally embraces a terrible truth she has been suppressing.

Waking from Dreams is a faerie tale but is as much about the protagonist’s emotional journey as about myth and magic.

A book full of quiet strength, understated power and mystery.  A feminine heroin with a unique perspective.  The descriptions of the Australian bush are exemplary, capturing the earth of the day and the unquiet of the night '...' leaving the reader peaceful and satisfied.
